Cat Urinary Catheter Insertion Technique:
Before use, ensure to wash your hands and apply medical-grade glycerin or other water-based lubricant to lubricate the outer surface of the urinary catheter.
Once the animal is sedated, lay it flat on its back and disinfect the genital area.
Apply lubricant to the tip of the urinary catheter.
Gently insert the catheter into the urethral opening.
If there is resistance after inserting the catheter halfway, slowly lower it by 90 degrees.
Once the resistance is relieved, simultaneously rotate the catheter while advancing it. (Note: If resistance persists during advancement, rinse the urethral cavity. Do not force it, as this may cause catheter kinking or urethral mucosa damage.)
After inserting the catheter, remove the guidewire (if present).
Secure the 6:100 Luer connector.
Use 2-0 or 3-0 surgical nylon thread to suture it in place at the genital area.
Connect the end of the catheter to a urine bag or container.
Place an appropriate neck collar on the animal to prevent damage to the catheter or urine bag. (Note: Ensure the urine bag is positioned below the same level, allowing urine to flow into it via gravity, preventing reflux. After blockage clearance, consider taking X-rays or ultrasound to check for the presence of urinary stones.)
